This boutique island is one of Thailand's most popular destinations and looking at our Koh Samui map one immediately notices one of its biggest assets namely a vast choice of beaches to choose for your hotel location. The island is located in the west of the Thai Gulf, approximately two hours by ferry from Don Sak Pier in the province of Surat Thani or can also be reached from Chompon Pier, both of which can be reached by bus from numerous areas like Bangkok, Hua Hin or Krabi.
This idyllic destination started as a backpacker hang-out in the 70's, but has since seen rapid development and today luxury 5 star hotels in Koh Samui cater to discerning clientele. These are set in picturesque locations allowing stunning ocean views with small islands in the distance. The main point of entry is Nathon pier although the high speed Lomphraya catamaran now also feature their own pier. Apart from boat travel the island can also be reached by plane sporting the most unique island style airport.
Samui's most popular beach is Chaweng, an area which includes countless restaurants, bars, shops, markets and vibrant nightlife scene. Approximately 15 minutes drive to the north is ChoengMon Beach, the most up-market part area with mainly luxury hotels. Lamai is short on the heels of Chaweng with a range of attractions and nightlife of its own. This area's beach is long, wide and flat and include some of the most popular hotels on the island with names like Le Meridien and many others.
