As we have mentioned elsewhere, this charming island retains its authentic character much better than many of its competitors, irrespective of it now boasting sever 5 star hotels. One of the reasons is that transportation in Koh Phangan is limited to only a few basic options as is the number of vehicles and congested traffic on its roads is therefore non-existent.
But then again, this is not a place where public transport is required in high volume. It is a much smaller island than Koh Samui for instance and besides heading for the villages of Haadrin and Tong sala where restaurants bars and pubs feature in high numbers along the narrow alleys, the best place to be is on the beach in front of your resort.
Scooter RentalsScooters is the primary mode of transport. Most resorts have scooters for rent which cost approximately 250 Baht for the day. The steep hills, sharp bends, loose sand on the road and many other road users who often have little experience can make it dangerous. Wear a helmet and drive slowly.
Scooter TaxiGreat for short distances and available at virtually all hours of the day and night. They wear red, green or yellow vests and will take you anywhere. Do negotiate the price before you get on. Fares depend on the distance and your bargaining skills. Not the safest mode of transport but convenient.
Songthaews or Baht BusKoh Phangan transport also include the Songthaews. These pick-up truck taxis which is the safest option an will get you anywhere on the island where a car can go at very reasonable fees. It is also our recommended transport after dark. Apart from being the safest, it is of course also very original and fun.
