Where to Stay in Koh Tao
Turtle Island, so called due to the many water turtles that used to inhabit the waters around its shores, is located in the Gulf of Thailand approximately 35 kilometers north of Koh Phangan and just over an hour by boat from Koh Samui.
This charming destination has a landmass of little more than 20 square km, but still allows you to choose between a number of beaches and hidden coves, most of which offer befitting island style accommodation. We hope our abbreviated rendition below will help you decide where to stay in Koh Tao for your expectations to be met.
Being as small as it is, almost all locations will see you within moments of Sairee Beach, the primary entertainment area on the island featuring the highest concentration of restaurants, bars and a modest nightlife. Sairee's accommodation include dive resorts like Koh Tao Coral Grand, cheap huts and charming beach bungalows and, just about all of them are walking distance from amenities.
The island's pier is at the southern end of Sairee and on its other side is Jansom Bay which feature the popular Charm Churee Villa Resort. It is an intimate and private cove flanked by rocky outcrops and the perfect place to snorkel in water which sees limited other tourists. Freedom Beach is located on the southern tip of the island. It is the most secluded, pristine, 15 minutes by scooter from Sairee and one of the best places to stay for romantic couples.
Separated from Freedom Beach by smooth boulders is Tiang Og Bay, a beautiful white curving ribbon of sand of hypnotic proportions and utterly serene. To top it all it features one of the best hotels in Koh Tao namely the Jamahkiri Resort which spoil and seduce with amazing views from its pavilion style accommodations.
