The nightlife one would find when staying in hotels in Phuket or resorts in Pattaya is definitely absent on Koh Samet. Koh Samet Beaches
Hat Sai Kaew, meaning Daimond Beach, is a beautiful 800 meter sandy beach on Koh Samet. Many beach side bars and restaurants light up the seafront making it he most popular nightlife venue on the island. Ao Hin Khok is much smaller than Hat Sai Kaew and also offers good beach restaurants, bars, fire shows and some other activity. This beach is being more frequented by backpackers. |
Ao Phai offers slightly more up-market Koh Samet hotels while Ao Phutsa is a very small secluded beach. Hat Ao Phrao, meaning Coconut Bay Beach, is host to basically only top-end accommodation. Other beaches such as Ao Kew, Noi Na and Vongduen caters for anything from budget to top-end accommodation. |

Bang Bao Fishing Village
The village itself is a great place to walk and shop for souvenirs, and an equally or greater place to dine of freshly caught seafood that is displayed at most food places at the entrance. The restaurants perched over the sea provide a fantastic setting and it’s a great place to spend a lazy afternoon taking in some fresh sea air. Fishing boats still call this village home although these days there are as many snorkeling and scuba diving boats moored here as fishing vessels. |

The Poet and the Mermaid
In a poem of Sunthorn Phu, a revered Thai poet from the 19th century tells the story of prince Aphai Mani being rescued from the sea by a mermaid. They subsequently got married and lived happily on the island of Koh Samet. A statue to illustrate the story has been placed on Hat Sai Kaew (diamond beach) on Koh Samet. |
